WHAT’S YOUR E-MAIL COSTING YOU?

E-mail - love it or hate it, its today’s way of communicating. In a relatively short space of time it’s become the de facto business communication tool too. But have you thought about how much its costing you?

Our reliance on e-mail communication has also spawned the concept of e-mail overload plaguing users and pressuring business to manage e-mail more effectively. Back in April 2008 already the New York Times was reporting that "E-MAIL has become the bane of some people’s professional lives" due to information overload.

So… Is SAAS Greener?

Published 29.01.10  |  Category:  CIO Strategy  |  Posted by Maxwell Ramutla

GREEN, the stylish thing to say for anyone with an IT budget today…

I have met very many CIO’s and other IT folk over the last year, to more recent times, with a keen interest in exploring ways of turning their IT operations green or at best showing how their IT organisations are reducing their carbon footprint. It is quite interesting to think about this in more detail, and to try and understand what it essentially represents.

Stepping back and reassessing our market condition, it seems a daunting task. Business demands solutions that meet its operational efficiency objectives while also promoting a level of competitive advantage and innovative differentiation. Just when I you thought the role of IT was merely to keep the business running.

Imaginative email Service... Simplified Email Service

Published 28.09.09  |  Category:  Innovation  |  Posted by Maxwell Ramutla

Imaginative-Innovation

The world continues to see massive amount of innovation since the introduction of the Internet. The individual need for instant gratification has become a norm that most consumers have become accustomed to. A good example of the commercial application of instant gratification is seen in the implementation of internet banking services that continue to be the best example of the positive impact of Internet cloud based computing in South Africa.

We have all been witness to relentless innovation in some form or other from the internet as it continues to have impact in all we do. I, for one, am a self confessed victim of the serial innovation bug. As a testament to the innovation available to business today, Afrovation provides simplified collaboration services, that include email services. Our view is that email should be a treated as a utility service that any business has access to...

CIO: SaaS for South Africa

Published 14.07.09  |  Category:  CIO Strategy  |  Posted by Maxwell Ramutla

saas-for-south-africa.jpg

A growing number of South African CIOs we have interacted with, since I have been with Afrovation, have significant concerns about the impact of the latest wave of economic recession and its implications for their IT organisations. Our view is that it cannot be business as usual, CIOs have a limited amount of options, only two - either they proactively determine and drive their own response to the current economic challenges, or have these responses handed to them by their boards or companies or CEOs. We believe that the latter is not a viable option.

Therefore in forming their responses to the depressed economy, we believe that CIOs must run their IT organisations as lean as possible with the resources they have. The old “do more with less” concept needs to be a reality to all IT organisations today and in the future...

Forget about IT Problems

it-problems

Whenever I think about what organisations and people have to endure in providing technology services, a single word comes to mind, and that is to FORGET.

A few years ago, I led a team of talented folk in an IT division which at the time was responsible for providing email services to some 11,000 IT users that were geographically distributed. The IT division was responsible for 6 Data Centres, 400 Servers, 320 branch offices, about 90 Business Applications and a total IT staff compliment of 130 people. The team dynamics were extremely diverse with varying levels of enterprise systems architecture and support skills to application and desktop user support teams all running from a central location...

Email: Complexity is Costly!

Published 29.06.09  |  Category:  Operations  |  Posted by Maxwell Ramutla

email-complexity

Business and individuals today view email as a core communication tool that no one can effectively communicate without. I have identified a large amount of businesses that built and run their email infrastructure without carefully taking into consideration the amount of complexity they are introducing in their operations.

Let’s take a simple example in a company named NewCo (Pty) Ltd. NewCo has 100 staff members who use computers to fulfil their roles in the company. The IT Manager of NewCo, John More, will have to consider a number of business requirements and features for the email service to add value in the lives and work of the staff.

In providing its email service to its staff, John will have to take into consideration the following key requirements...
